The Heard Natural Science and History Museum has brought countless great discoveries to the DFW Metro. A staple of McKinney, Texas, the museum has been around for years. It continues to introduce area residents to world-class exhibits that even bigger cities haven’t seen. Heard’s newest returning dinosaur exhibit is no exception. Dinosaurs Live is the one of the museum’s best exhibits to date.

Exhibit’s long history in McKinney

The exhibit began 15 years ago, when the museum decided to bring dinosaurs to life. When it first began, the Jurassic Park movie series was still fresh on peoples minds. Much like the movies, Heard wanted to give visitors a realistic experience of dinosaurs first-hand.

In 2006, the McKinney museum built multiple actual-sized animatronic dinosaurs that gave guests a much safer alternative to visiting Jurassic Park. Because of their massive size, the dinosaurs dwarfed guests. They gave them the opportunity to learn just how awe-inspiring the Tyrannosaurus Rex or the long-necked Brachiosaurus were. When the exhibit first started in 2006, it was a hit.

Museum dinosaur exhibit changes

Due to COVID, the exhibit has experienced some changes. The museum has taken precautions to keep everyone’s safety in mind. Like previous years, the exhibit will take place outdoors in the Heard Wildlife Sanctuary. You’ll be able to view the dinosaurs from Heard’s wildlife trails while keeping social distancing protocols.

This year, the museum is back with even more dinosaurs. The staples, like the T-Rex, Brachiosaurus, and Allosaurus, are all back from years prior. Here, we’ve listed all the dinosaur species that you’ll be able to check out when you visit.

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex
  • Dilophosaurus
  • Acrocanthosaurus
  • Allosaurus
  • Brachiosaurus
  • Diabloceratops
  • Megalosaurus
  • Stegocerases
  • Therizinosaurus
  • Utahraptor

Many of the dinosaurs will feature photo-op opportunities, so that you can get a picture when next to one of the historic giants. Because of changes this year, the exhibit will only be available if you buy tickets beforehand or are already a museum member.

Museum is McKinney’s pride and joy

The Heard Natural Science and History Museum is one of the most notable experiences in the area. Many neighboring cities, including Fairview and Allen, welcome the museum for the many visitors it brings to their cities too.

Heard first opened over 50 years ago, in 1967. It was the brainchild of a local philanthropist — Bessie Heard — that wanted to leave her mark on the city. Because of her commitment to the city of McKinney, Heard is still seen as one of the city’s most prominent historical figures.

A dinosaur exhibit you can’t miss

Be sure to check out the new exhibit while it’s still open this year. It’ll be closing on February 15th of next year, so there’s still plenty of time to stop by. You can get tickets for McKinney’s dinosaur exhibit on Heard’s website.
